How to Protest Your Property Taxes

Last year, we wrote an article about understanding your property taxes and how to protest them. Since this is a yearly event, we have decided to inform you about this topic once again. Each year, appraisal districts appraise all properties for taxation purposes as of January 1st of that year. HCAD has begun sending out reappraisal notices for real property in the past few weeks. If you haven’t received yours yet, you likely will soon. If you feel your values are higher than the market or higher than other comparable properties are assessed, then you should protest the valuation. Property tax protest deadline is May 1, 2017!

You can do the protest yourself or you can hire one of the many services that specialize in this (generally for 30-50% of the savings). Click here for a list of companies around Houston that will protest your taxes for you. We are a strong believer in the do-it-yourself approach and there are studies that suggest that those who use the DIY approach see larger reductions. Either way, it is very important that you understand the process of protesting for your home and how-to, so you can make an informed decision.

If you closed on your home with Sandcastle Homes in the past year, please contact Angela at AngelaVera@SandcastleHouston.com for assistance with your protest, which in many cases we will do on your behalf, at no cost to you.

Click here to read more on how to protest your property taxes from an article from PropertyTaxReduction.com. It does a great job of explaining the process and options, so we are sharing it with our readers. This is not, however, an endorsement of the services provided by PropertyTaxReduction.com, of which we have no direct knowledge or experience. The Harris County Appraisal District also has some very good information.

I just moved into my new Sandcastle home and I think it’s a wonderful place to live. They have been very helpful, particularly Lynette and Steve. From the owner Mike Salomen down, it has been a truly positive experience. I would highly recommend anyone who wants to buy a new home that is built of high quality to consider this home builder.
